Abstract

Background and Aim: Endodontically treated molars present a clinical challenge in choosing the most appropriate restorative approach, with full crown restorations being the conventional choice. However, occlusal fillings have gained popularity as a less invasive alternative. This retrospective study investigates the long-term outcomes and factors affecting the fate of different types of occlusal fillings in endodontically treated molars without crown restorations.

Material and Methods: Clinical data, radiographic analysis, and patient records were analyzed to assess success rates, longevity, and complications associated with various occlusal filling materials, providing valuable insights into their clinical performance. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize patient characteristics, and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, were employed to assess success rates and longevity of occlusal fillings based on material type.

Results: This study encompassed 200 subjects meeting the inclusion criteria, involving a total of 450 teeth treated with root canal therapy (RCT). Subjects' ages ranged from 20 to 45 years, with a mean age of patients at 51.12±05.68 years. Among the 200 teeth restored through various methods, including composite restoration (115), glass-ionomer cement (GIC) restoration (25), and silver amalgam restoration (60), all were deemed successful as no re-treatment was necessary, and the restorations remained intact.

Conclusion: Occlusal fillings in endodontically treated molars without crown restorations represent a conservative and cost-effective approach to tooth restoration. Material selection plays a pivotal role in determining the success and longevity of these fillings.
