https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6367

The study investigated the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and toxicity profiles of different polarity solvent extracts of Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) Willd. (family: Asteraceae) in albino rats and mice. The petroleum ether (VAPE), chloroform (VACE), and hydroalcoholic (VAHA) extracts were evaluated using Carrageenan-induced paw edema (CIPE) and cotton pellet-induced granuloma methods for anti-inflammatory properties, while central and peripheral pain relief activities were assessed using the hot plate and acetic acid-induced writhing test. The study also included toxicological profiling using the Up-and-Down Procedure method. Results showed that VAPE, VACE, and VAHA at a single oral dose of 2000 mg/kg were safe. These extracts demonstrated dose-dependent anti-inflammatory effects, significantly reducing inflammation in CIPE and cotton pellet-induced granuloma models. They also exhibited positive effects on serum and liver tissue biochemical parameters. Moreover, the extracts displayed central and peripheral analgesic effects, as evidenced by increased latency time in the hot plate test and reduced number of writhes induced by acetic acid in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, the study highlights the significant dose-dependent anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of different polarity solvent extracts of V. anthelmintica, with VAHA showing more pronounced effects. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of action.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6366

Spinacia oleracea Linn., commonly known as spinach, has been traditionally used in ethnomedical therapy for various purposes, including the treatment of obesity, lung inflammation, lumbago, flatulence, and urinary calculi. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of petroleum ether (SOPE) and ethanolic (SOEE) extracts of Spinacia oleracea against indomethacin-induced enterocolitis in a rat model. Additionally, acute oral toxicity was evaluated using the Up-and-Down Procedure (Test No. 425: Acute Oral Toxicity). Results revealed the safety of both SOPE and SOEE at a dose of 2000 mg/kg, with normal observations in behavioral, body weight, organ weight, biochemical, and hematological parameters, except for slight alterations in respiration and salivation with SOPE and SOEE respectively. In the disease model, SOPE at 400 mg/kg and SOEE at 200 and 400 mg/kg exhibited significant protective effects against indomethacin-induced enterocolitis. These effects were evident through improvements in macroscopic, biochemical, hematological, and histological data. Overall, the findings suggest that SOEE exhibits more pronounced protective effects against indomethacin-induced enterocolitis compared to SOPE, possibly due to the presence of polyphenolic phytoconstituents in SOEE.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6363

This paper conducts a comprehensive exploration of decision-making concepts in economics and finance, tracing the evolution from the concept of Rationality and Rational Choice Theory (RCT). The study extends beyond traditional frameworks to cover the downfall of rationality in economics and finance theories giving rise to bounded rationality and satisficing theory. It also covers the Dual Systems in Human Decision-Making, substantiating this basis with evidence from the fields of psychology and neuroscience. Further, going beyond rationality, some key theories/concepts are explored such as prospect theory, heuristics, biases, and social-cultural norms, etc., that explain the cognitive processes behind decision-making and bring forth the external influences that influence decisions in economics and finance. Through an extensive study of available literature, uniting diverse perspectives and ongoing insights that stretch beyond conventional economic and financial paradigms, this paper aims to provide an inclusive understanding of the theoretical and conceptual development of decision-making over the years.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6362

The city of El-Meniaa has witnessed various historical stages, making it one of the ancient cities and a city that experienced significant prosperity. This can be attributed to its strategic location, as it lies in the heart of the African desert, making it a transit point for many trade caravans coming from kingdoms and countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The abundance of underground water due to the presence of a massive underground water reservoir led to the emergence of springs. The presence of terrain such as hills provided a strategic location for the construction of fortresses, and the presence of plains enriched by the waters of seasonal rivers from time to time. All of this made it a geographical center that attracted human groups seeking stability, security, and guaranteed livelihoods. The city has witnessed several developments and historical events, which turned it into a competitive hub among different ethnicities, especially during the period of conflict between the cities of Ben Zazu and Al-Qal'a. After the destruction of Ben Zazu, only the fortress built by the Zanata tribe remained, utilizing this geographical area until the arrival of the Arabs in modern times, who took control of the ancient palace. Through this research, we will present the most important historical stages that the city has gone through from its inception until the end of the modern period.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6360

The basic elements of survival of human race is based upon ecological environment, the development of social, economic and the security of the ecological environment are closely interwoven and interact with each other. The environmental infirmity, unswervingly affects the steadiness of the local ecosystem and the sustainable development of the ecological environment. The assessment of regional ecological fragility is a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the uneven allocation of ecological environment factors caused by human socio-economic activities or changes in ecosystems. About 220 years ago the industrial revolution took place– factories came up and things began to be made in bulk, using machines. Machines need energy to run; most of this energy comes from fuels- like coal and oil which are known as fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are burnt, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, increased. The gases listed are called Greenhouse Gases (GHGs), over the last 200 years our activities are dumping massive quantities of GHGs into the atmosphere. It is clear; this time around it is humans that are responsible for climate change, hence we are facing a fragile environment.

A growing body of research shows that the more people value money, image, classs, status, and positions by personal achievement, the less they care about other living species and the less likely they are to recycle, to turn off lights in unused rooms, and to walk or bicycle to work1. It is high time for a complete and comprehensive examination of the impacts of change in land use, loss of biodiversity, use of fertilizers and pesticides and consistent pollution of air and water bodies. With half the world now living in cities and billions of dollars spent each year on growth and infrastructure, we need to finance and implement sustainable infrastructure practices that reduce our environmental footprint, employ clean technologies and are economically viable. Handprints are needed to save the environment and minimize the pressure or footprints on environment.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6359

Gender neutrality within legal frameworks is a cornerstone of promoting fairness, equity, and justice for individuals of all genders. This paper critically examines the challenges, opportunities, and policy recommendations surrounding the implementation of gender-neutral laws in India, with a focus on addressing the misuse of laws by both men and women. Key areas of analysis include existing laws favoring women, such as those pertaining to domestic violence and sexual offenses, which often neglect the rights and protections of men. Conversely, laws neglecting men, such as those governing parental rights and child custody, perpetuate stereotypes and inequalities within society. Instances of law misuse further underscore the need for more balanced and equitable legal provisions, with recommendations including legislative reforms, institutional initiatives, and public awareness campaigns. Suggested policy recommendations emphasize the importance of enacting gender-neutral legislation, strengthening safeguards against law misuse, providing institutional training programs, launching public awareness campaigns, and investing in research and data collection efforts. By implementing these recommendations, policymakers can work towards creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive legal system that upholds the rights and dignity of all individuals, irrespective of their gender identity or expression.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6356

The ability to provide opportunities for high-quality education to the children in the country will determine the future of our nation. ‘Quality’ has become the watchword of current educational scenario in all the countries across the globe. A quality education is one that focuses on the all-round development of the child – the social, emotional, mental, physical and cognitive development of each student regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status or geographic location. It prepares the child for life, not just for examinations. This is possible only when the teachers possess favorable positive attitude towards teaching profession and determination to provide quality education to the students. The present study is an attempt to explore the attitude of teachers towards the factors that influence the quality of education in secondary schools. The researchers used a well prepared and standardized questionnaire as the tool for collection of data from a sample of 300 teachers selected from 50 secondary schools located in the rural as well as urban areas of Visakhapatnam District in Andhra Pradesh using Stratified Random Sampling technique. The data were analyzed using Mean score values, standard deviations and t-tests. The findings of the study revealed Gender and Age of teachers have no influence on their attitude towards the factors that influence the quality of education in secondary schools. However, the experience of teachers has a positive significant influence on their attitude towards quality education in secondary schools. Teachers with a teaching experience of more that 10 years exhibited better attitude towards quality improvement in secondary schools as compared to the new entrants into the profession. The study suggests that the managements of secondary schools should recruit to the schools only those teachers who have passion for teaching with a view to provide quality education to the children in secondary schools.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6354

The present study covers an interesting area of the representation of wo(men) from within the field of language and gender. With a focus on transitivity choices at clause level, the researchers have employed Halliday’s (1985) transitivity model as suggested by Mills (1995) in her feminist stylistics to trace and unpack the relationship between language use and gender depiction in Faruqi’s novel The Mirror of Beauty (2013). Grounded in feminist stylistics propositions, the study utilizes a mixed method approach where data is collected through close reading method guided by purposive sampling technique. The data comprise of 6 extracts containing a total number of 83 clauses which have been analyzed for process-participant division to see gender differences. The findings of the study reveal that men characters are portrayed through material (37%), verbal (8%), relational (4%), behavioral (4%) and mental (4%) processes while the woman is presented through material (33%), behavioral (5%), verbal (4%), relational (1%) and existential (1%) processes. This disparity in gender depiction is further highlighted when man appears with maximum actor roles (26%) and woman through maximum goal roles (27%). This unequal distribution of processes and participants’ roles hints at the sexist and biased attitude of Faruqi (2013) towards the depiction of woman where she is commanded and controlled by active and dominant men in romance scenes. The researchers have found the transitivity model suitable to analyze linguistic choices of the writers to see gender depiction as claimed by Mills (1995).

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6353

This research project aimed to assess a predictive model regarding the influence of values and countervalues on the perception of public transparency among students of business administration and law in the Department of Cesar. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and predictive research approach was employed. A non-probabilistic sampling method using the snowball technique involved the participation of 1061 students from both public and private universities in the Department of Cesar. Data collection utilized an academic and personal characterization form, the Valanti questionnaire for identifying values and countervalues, and the Public Transparency Attitudes Scale (EATP). Findings underscored that the values of rectitude, love, and non-violence exhibit a significant positive correlation with attitudes toward transparency, while the latter is negatively correlated with the values of truth and peace. Furthermore, the predictive model revealed that a higher level of rectitude predicts a greater level of attitudes toward transparency, whereas a higher level of truth predicts lower levels of attitudes toward transparency. Significant predictors also included the program of study, gender, age, semester, type of university, and prior experience as a public servant. These results lead to the conclusion that there is a need to strengthen academic processes for identifying key areas of intervention and policies aimed at enhancing the ethics and transparency of students who will become future stewards of public funds.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6347

Since the “Fawasil” exert a profound influence on the psyche of the individual and their ability to make it more receptive to the concepts and meanings presented, this descriptive-analytical study examines the beauty of the sounds produced by the “Fawasil” and their relationship with the connotative meanings revealed through the verses. Four main aspects of the auditory phenomena framed the analysis of this study: addition, deletion, “taskeen”, in addition to elongation, and “ghunnah”. Data were collected from verses 66:67, 19-29, 78-81, 94, 45-47 and 78-80, 71-76, 5-14, 42-48, 2882, 70-72 in chapters 33, 69,26, 12, 11, 38, 71,19, 51, and 2 respectively. Results underscore the notion that the “Fasila” emphasizes the acoustic dimension of expression. Furthermore, the reasons for deletion in the “Fawasil” are rooted in the attention to phonetic harmony and semantic coherence. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that “taskeen” maintains phonetic consistency despite variations in the verses’ grammatical features. Additionally, the sound /nun/ enhances the precision of the “Fawasil”. Another observation accentuates the nuanced prosodic intricacies within the text, with repetition and parallelism playing a pivotal role in improving the grasp of Quranic phonetics. Ultimately, recommendations are presented for researchers as a foundation for forthcoming studies.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6345

English Language Education is a concept relating to the use of English in the teaching-learning process. It encompasses pedagogy of English Language Teaching (ELT); and the development of various skills relating to English language learning. When the teacher provides teaching-learning experiences to his pupils, his teaching may be termed as ‘Discourse-Oriented Teaching’ or ‘Discourse-Oriented Pedagogy’. A discourse is a mode of communicating certain ideas meaningfully in a particular context. The present study is an attempt to explore the attitude of secondary school teachers towards teaching English through Discourse-Oriented Pedagogy. The researchers used a well prepared and standardized questionnaire as the tool for collection of data from a sample of 500 teachers (200 Headmasters and 300 School Assistants in English) selected from 200 secondary schools located in the three north coastal districts, viz., Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh using Stratified Random Sampling technique. The data were analyzed using Percentage Analysis. The profiles of teachers with a high positive attitude have been prepared. The preferences of teachers on components under different dimensions have been identified. The findings of the study revealed that teachers working in secondary schools have a high positive attitude towards teaching English through Discourse-Oriented Pedagogy with regard to the dimension, ‘Language acquisition’ (45.45%) followed by the other dimensions, ‘The classroom processes’ (44.44%); and ‘The role of the Teacher and the Learner’ (42.86%). The study suggested the administration to organize a number of orientation programmes to the teachers on the use of Discourse-Oriented Pedagogy in teaching English for the benefit of the students of secondary schools.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6344

Teaching is said to be a nation building activity and the teacher is the architect of the future. He/she is the pivot around which all the educational programs such as curriculum, syllabus, textbooks, evaluation etc., revolve. The best system of education may fail to achieve the desired goals in the absence of sincere, competent and professionally talented teachers. The teacher has the rare privilege of shaping the most precious material of the land –the boys and the girls during their crucial period of development. It is the need of the hour to provide quality education to the students at different levels in general and at secondary level in particular. This is possible only when the teachers, particularly women who have passion for teaching, possess favourable positive attitude towards teaching profession and determination to provide quality education to the students. The present study is an attempt to explore the attitude of women teachers towards the measures to be taken to improve quality in teaching at secondary level. The researchers used a well prepared and standardized questionnaire as the tool for collection of data from a sample of 200 women teachers selected from 40 secondary schools located in the rural as well as urban areas of Visakhapatnam District in Andhra Pradesh using Stratified Random Sampling technique. The data were analyzed using Mean score values, standard deviations and t-tests. The findings of the study revealed that the demographic variables – Age, Teaching Experience and location of the school have no influence on the attitude of teachers towards quality improvement in teaching at secondary level. The study suggests that the women teachers working in secondary schools should possess a positive favorable attitude towards teaching profession with a view to provide quality education to the children at secondary level during the crucial period of their growth and development.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6335

Compensatory jurisprudence is an emerging concept of the criminal justice delivery system in the recent times. The guiding principle of the recognition of the victim’s right to compensation is to address the awful impact of the commission of crime upon the victim. This new development of the criminal justice system towards recognition of victim’s right to compensation stems from judicial pronouncements and recommendations made by the reports of various committees and commissions constituted by the Government, from time to time, to inquire into the existing criminal justice system. Due to the emergence of compensatory jurisprudence, both the Union and State Governments have formulated and notified various victim compensation schemes aimed at developing a legislative framework for the recognition of victim’s right to compensation in India. However, the major weakness of the recent law is that the rights of victim are thinly projected and it leaves the provision of compensation to the sole discretion of the judge. The present paper explores the legal framework recognizing victim’s right to compensation and a need of constitutionalisation of victim’s rights. Further, the paper discusses the difficulties of the victims of crime in getting compensation under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and non-exercise of discretionary power by the trial Courts. This paper also evaluates emerging need of an independent victim legislation to recognize the rights of the victim in par with those of the accused.

https://namibian-studies.com/index.php/JNS/article/view/6329

Different approaches exist for obtaining construction projects, including options like design-build (DB), design-bid-build (DBB), construction management at risk (CM-at-risk), and integrated project delivery (IPD), among several alternatives. Selecting the most suitable procurement plan for a specific project requires careful consideration of each approach. In this process, a selection approach and criteria need to be evaluated. This study aims to enhance clarity by synthesizing existing literature on factors influencing project delivery selection and presenting a comprehensive list of these factors. A methodical analysis was conducted, initially identifying many papers, which were narrowed down to 57 relevant to construction projects. Through the examination and consolidation of recurring themes, a definitive list of 11 criteria and 22 sub-criteria was established. The most frequently reported factors, in descending order, included concerns of owner, contractor, cost, time, quality, risks, contracts and claims, laws and regulations, complexity, size, and type. It's important to note that these factors vary from project to project, and the study provides an argument on how they influence the project delivery methods (PDMs) selection. The results of this research provide valuable insights into the impacts associated with different PDMs in the construction industry. This study informs industry professionals, policymakers, and project owners about the implications of their choices.
