Abstract
Social media and mobile technology together form a lethal duo that has made relationships and communication increasingly virtual. It creates the illusion of presence, despite not actually being present. Actually, it is more of an awareness of the other's existence than any meaningful dialogue. Even in everyday situations like homes, playgrounds, workplaces, and social gatherings, as well as while traveling or shopping, the same is repeated. In this article, a sociological analysis on usage pattern, purposes and impact of social media on college students with special reference to Mumbai city has been discussed.
