Abstract

The article highlights the Indian police's abuse of authority and unlawful detention practices. The article states that regardless of status, caste, or religion, everyone is equal in the eyes of the law and is punishable. Similarly, police officers are also responsible for any crimes they may have committed while they were employed. The main responsibilities of police, an essential component of the criminal justice system, are to prevent, detect, and investigate crimes. People's lives are touched by the police. The police are essential to maintaining public safety and dignity because they stop crime and catch criminals. Additionally, the police have an impact on political, social, and economic circumstances, People's lives are impacted by the police. The police play a vital role in ensuring people's safety and dignity by stopping illegal behavior and catching criminals. By influencing social, political, and economic circumstances, the police also support the growth and integrity of the country.

The word "police," which means "the civil force of a State, responsible for maintaining law and order in the society,"  became a synonym for "policy," or civil administration, in the English language around 1530. The word "police" in English, which was adopted from Middle French police, which meant "government or administration of public order" rather than constables, denoted "civil administration" until the middle of the 19th century. Indeed, the terms "police," "politics," and "policy" are synonymous. The Latin word "politeia," which means "civil administration" or "the State," is derived from the Greek words "polis" (city) and "politikè," which means "that which belongs to the city state or to civil society." The police are "an official organization whose job it is to make people obey the law and to prevent and detect crime; the people who work for this organization," to use a general definition.

India's flawed criminal justice system has once again been brought to light by the tragic death of Fr. Stan Swamy. The obvious shortcomings in the way the police, courts, and prisons operate—all of which appear to operate in silos—are indicative of the breakdown of our criminal justice system. There is a broader conversation about criminal justice reform in the biggest democracy in the world, but it is conspicuously absent from our policy and political circles. In India, police abuse and violence have become widespread, and not much is being done to hold them accountable. In addition to violating the Constitution and other laws, police officers' unjustified encounter murders and other unlawful tactics deny accused people their right to a fair trial.
