Abstract

Raniganj town is located in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. With its large coal reserves, which was discovered in the late 18th century, the town and the surrounding areas gradually developed into an industrial manufacturing centre. The town is mainly settled by the migrants from different parts of the country. Muslims came to the town mainly from the Hindi speaking states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Muslims have experienced mobility in their social condition as they have actively participated in the economic and political life of the town. Although not part of the economic and political elite but they have certainly used the opportunities offered by the town.
