Abstract
This study examines effective classroom management practices in music education, specifically in choral classrooms. As music plays a vital role in children's lives, it is essential for teachers to provide clear expectations and help students learn musical concepts and develop performance skills. Effective classroom management is a key factor in achieving high levels of student involvement and academic achievement, making it a critical component of teaching. The physical arrangement and organization of a classroom can either facilitate or hinder effective instruction, and choral classrooms present a unique set of challenges with no desks and a higher student-to-teacher ratio. They require active teacher and student participation throughout the entire class period. In contrast to traditional classroom teachers who require silence, choir teachers encourage students to make sounds, particularly singing. Choral ensembles often include a heterogeneous mix of students in terms of both age and ability level, making effective classroom management even more important while research has been conducted on classroom management, there is a lack of music education research in this area. Identifying effective classroom management practices and common challenges faced by music educators is therefore crucial to help them become more proficient at managing their classrooms. The study recommends that music educators promote frequent use of class meetings for group discussions, problem identification, and solution pursuit, rather than relying on punishment, rewards, and praise. This approach fosters a collaborative and supportive learning environment that empowers students to take ownership of their learning and builds a sense of community within the classroom. The findings of this study can be used by music educators in higher education institutions in Zamboanga del Norte to enhance their classroom management skills and create a positive and engaging learning experience for their students.
